J.T.'s Miami Adventure!
Episcopal
High School football player, J.T. Townsend suffered a spinal cord injury in a high school
football game. The senior team captain assisted on a tackle from his strong safety
position when he fell to the ground and briefly lost consciousness. He was transported
from the field on a cart to Shands Jacksonville. Since then J.T. has been in and out
of the childrens hospital, rehabilitation clinic and doctors offices.
In July 2005, he became the 18th patient to have a diaphragm pacing system
surgically implanted, which allowed him to come off a ventilator. For this local
heros dream, he wanted to meet one of his own heroes, Shaquille O'Neal of the Miami
Heat. J.T. was treated like royalty in Miami when he visited the Miami Heat and
Miami Dolphins. A dream come true!
Dreamers' Corner
Have you ever wondered whats going on in the lives of our former dreamers?
Matthew Hines' Update
Matthew was 10 years old and battling
lung cancer when he went on his dream trip to the Grand Canyon in 1999. He went on
to graduate in the top 20% of his high school class, maintaining a 3.5 grade point
average. Matthew is now a six-foot-eight junior on basketball scholarship at
Southern University in New Orleans. What an amazing story of inspiration!
Tim's Update
Tim, who was 15 when he was referred to Dreams Come True due to a
brain tumor, enjoyed a dream trip to Los Angeles to visit family and friends in 1991. We
are happy to report Tim graduated from medical school in May 2002, and he is now DR.
TIM! He went to Wake Forest University for his pediatric residency, then decided to
explore the field of emergency medicine. Upon completion of his residency in emergency
medicine, Tim and his beautiful family moved to Phoenix where he is now employed.
